Home > Thailand tackles human trafficking problemABC Radio Australia, 30 April 2008Thailand has adopted new guidelines to combat the increasing problem of human trafficking in the kingdom, where 54 Burmese migrant workers suffocated to death on a truck in April. Thousands of Burmese illegally cross the border into Thailand each month looking for work, but often end up being exploited by employers. The government says its relevant ministries will implement an anti-trafficking law which builds on existing measures to penalise exploitative employers. The International Labour Organisation says exploitation of trafficked workers is worst among domestic servants and in the fishing, agriculture and construction industries. |
