Australia urged to lead anti-slavery campaign

ABC, Radio Australia, 11 April 2008>

An American anti-slavery campaigner says Australia should be leading the world in the fight against the problem.

Dr David Batstone, a professor of ethics from the University of San Francisco, says Australian politicians have shown their commitment to stopping slavery and human trafficking.

He says easily protected borders, a democratic tradition, and close connections to Asia put Australia in a good position.

"Australia could be a place that really could stamp out slavery, it would be not that difficult for Australia to end trafficking and end slavery inside its borders," Dr Batstone said.

He also says Australia could have an impact on the Asia region, where most of the world's slaves still live.
